Why Barefoot
Barefoot shoes are designed to let your feet move the way they would without shoes, while still protecting them from the ground. Here is what that means, how we prove it, and how to get started.
What makes a shoe barefoot
Wide toe box
Room for your toes to spread naturally
Zero drop
Heel and toes level, for natural posture
Thin, flexible sole
Feel the ground and move freely
Lightweight
Barely there, all day long

Certified barefoot
The Amai has been tested by NOVEX, an independent footwear technology laboratory in La Rioja, Spain, and certified as meeting the requirements for barefoot footwear. So when we call it barefoot, that has been measured in a lab, not just printed on a box.
What the lab confirmed:
- Zero drop
- Thin sole, between 3 and 6 mm
- Ultra flexible sole
- Lightweight, with no rigid stabilisers
- Removable insole
- Flexible materials

Our barefoot sneaker
The Amai brings Plakton's thirty years of footwear craft to barefoot. A roomy toe box, a zero drop sole and soft, breathable uppers, with two sets of laces in every box.

Barefoot questions, answered
Barefoot
How do I start wearing barefoot shoes?
Start gradually. Wear your new pair for a few hours a day at first and build up as your feet adapt. Most people find they settle in over a few weeks.
How do I find my size?
Measure your foot length in millimetres and use the size finder on any product page. Every size change within 30 days is on us, you only cover return shipping.
What does zero drop mean?
Your heel and toes sit at the same height, with no raised heel. Your foot stays level, the way it is when you stand barefoot.
Is the Amai really a barefoot shoe?
Yes. It has been tested by NOVEX, an independent footwear laboratory in Spain, and certified as barefoot footwear: zero drop, a thin and ultra flexible sole, a lightweight build, flexible materials and a removable insole.
