Our relationship with Shopify

Our store runs on Shopify, which processes personal information about how you use the store in order to provide and improve it. Shopify also uses some information from your interactions with our store, other Shopify stores and Shopify itself to provide features such as fraud protection. For that processing, Shopify is responsible for your information, including responding to requests about it. You can read the Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy and make requests through the Shopify Privacy Portal.

Information stored outside South Africa

Some of these providers, including Shopify, Google, Cloudflare and hCaptcha, store or process information outside South Africa. Under section 72 of POPIA, we only use providers who are bound by laws, binding corporate rules or agreements that give your information a level of protection substantially similar to POPIA.

How long we keep it

  • Order, payment and accounting records: for as long as tax and company law requires, generally five to seven years
  • Newsletter details: until you unsubscribe
  • Messages and enquiries: up to two years after our last contact, unless they relate to an order
  • Analytics data: no longer than 14 months

After that we delete or anonymise it.

How we protect it

No system is completely secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect your information, as section 19 of POPIA requires. Our site and checkout are encrypted. Payments are handled by providers that meet the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, and we never see or store your full card number. Access to customer information is limited to the people who need it to do their work. If a breach ever put your personal information at risk, we would tell you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.

Under POPIA you have the right to:

  • Ask whether we hold personal information about you, and for a copy of it
  • Ask us to correct information that is wrong, or delete information we no longer have a reason to keep
  • Object to us using your information, including for direct marketing
  • Withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting anything we did before
  • Complain to the Information Regulator

To use any of these rights, email info@plakton.co.za. We may need to confirm your identity first, and someone acting for you will need to show that you have authorised them. We will not treat you differently for using your rights, and we will respond within a reasonable time. Our PAIA manual is available on request.
